You run a business. You do not have time to be a full-time content creator. Good news: you do not need to be. Social media marketing for a small business can be simple.

This plan has 5 steps. You can start today.

Step 1: Pick one goal

What do you want more of? Pick only one for now.

  • Calls or bookings — for salons, gyms, clinics, home services.
  • Leads — for realtors, coaches, agencies.
  • Sales — for shops and TikTok Shop sellers.
  • Visits — for restaurants, cafes and local stores.

Your goal decides what you post and what you ask people to do at the end of each post.

Step 2: Pick one or two apps

Do not try to be everywhere. Pick the apps where your buyers spend time.

AppGood forBest post types
TikTokReaching new people fast, even with 0 followersSlideshows, short videos
InstagramLocal buyers, repeat customers, trustCarousels, Reels, Stories
YouTube ShortsPosts that keep getting found in searchShort videos
FacebookOlder buyers, local groupsPhotos, short videos

For most small businesses, TikTok + Instagram is a strong start. The same slideshow can go on both.

Step 3: Know what to post

Most businesses get stuck here. Use these 5 post types and rotate them.

  1. Tips — "3 ways to keep your lawn green in July." Teach one small thing.
  2. Mistakes — "5 mistakes first-time buyers make." People love to avoid pain.
  3. Before and after — show a result. A clean car, a new haircut, a staged room. Realtors can start before the listing is live with a coming soon post.
  4. Behind the scenes — how you make, pack or fix things.
  5. Questions you get every week — answer them in a post. You will never run out.

Step 4: Post every day for 30 days

Posting often matters more than posting perfect. Each post is a new chance to reach people. One post a day for 30 days teaches you more than 4 perfect posts a month.

The trick is to plan the month in one sitting. Use our free 30-day social media content calendar to do it in under an hour.

Batch it

Make a week of posts in one sitting. Then schedule them. Doing it day by day is how most people quit by week two.

Step 5: Check your numbers every week

Once a week, look at your posts. Which ones got the most views, saves and comments? Make more posts like those. Stop making the ones that flop.

  • Views tell you if the hook worked.
  • Saves and shares tell you if the post was useful.
  • Comments and messages tell you if people want to buy.

How much should a small business spend on social media?

You can start with $0 and your phone. The real cost is time: making 30 good posts a month can take 10+ hours. That is why many owners hire help or use a tool. Read how much a social media manager costs to compare your options.

What changes in November and December

The plan above stays the same, but the calendar does half the work for you: Small Business Saturday, the shipping cutoffs and your holiday hours are all posts that write themselves. See Christmas social media post ideas for a small business for the dates and the captions.
